I got a thought of writing this article because most of the people when they use Change of Address tool. They loose their patience and remove the redirect or withdraw the change of address request.

You Will Not Lose Your Backlinks
When you use change of address tool and when Google successfully crawls your website. The current backlinks which you have to your website will not be lost.
The same backlinks will be forwarded or assigned to your new domain by Google.
You will be able to see the backlinks in your Google Search Console after Google successfully crawls your website on the new domain name.

Your Ranks Will Be Assigned to Your New Domain Name
For whatever keywords your current domain name is ranking, you will not lose the ranks. The same ranks will be assigned to your new domain name.
For example, if you are ranking for the keyword “How to memorize things quickly” then the same rank will be assigned to your new domain name.
So don’t fear about losing the ranks if you are changing the address of domain name of your website.
You have to Redirect Your Old Domain Name
If you want to change the address of your website then you have to redirect your old domain name to new domain name.
You have to setup 301 redirect which is added when we are changing the path permanently. You can setup 301 redirect via .htaccess file and also by forwarding your domain name.
Please note you should keep the 301 redirect always alive. If you remove the 301 redirect then Google may ignore or cancel your change of address request.
You have to Add & Verify Both the Domain Names
When you are changing the address of your website you have to add and verify both new and old domain names.
I am sure you have verified your old domain name in the Google Search Console. You have to add the new domain and verify ownership in the same account.
And even after changing the address you have to keep the original verification present.
You have to keep Patience, it takes time
Ok, this is the last thing I would like to tell you and that is you have to keep patience. Because it takes huge time.
But how much?
The minimum time which change of address tool is 2 weeks. But this is not true every time and for every website.
Google might take 3 months to crawl everything published on your website on the new domain name. So you have to keep patience and should not withdraw the change of address request.
At SMX Advanced talk Gary Illyes said that it can take up to 3 months for Google to follow the new website address. It should take 2 weeks but if you have a well-established website then it may take longer.
